BEHIND THE SCENES

The production behind the album artwork was a layered process. Firstly, the choir was used to create the arms emerging from grass. This was photographed and edited by Pierre van Vurren. Thereafter the selected photo was printed on canvas and given to artist, Bianca Viljoen, where she added her interpretation of identity to the photograph, with oil paint as medium. The artwork was exhibited at the Origins Concert in Dec 2020. The final layer of the process was to have the canvas photographed again where after the final album artwork was produced.

[Origin: Something that creates, causes, or gives rise to another]

The origins of South Africa’s cultural landscape is vast and varied, and so much more the identities that are connected to these cultures. Though cultural identity is the identity of belonging to a specific group, in a multicultural nation like South Africa, their individual existence can truly only be understood together. Identity is a constantly evolving phenomenon; the meeting point where cultures cross and influence each other. It is only in allowing this process to occur, that cultural identities stand the test of time.

The Horizons Project Choir invites you to come and explore various South African cultural identities through the lens of their languages, their practices and their individual identities. This album explores the idea of identity and the way that it evolves from its origin.
