Inyanga is sung in both isiZulu and Afrikaans. Both isiZulu and Afrikaans are two of the 11 official languages spoken in South Africa. isiZulu is a Nguni Language spoken in Southern Africa. Afrikaans is a West Germanic language spoken in South Africa, Namibia and, to a lesser extent, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Inyanga is a choral fusion work, combining the two languages of isiZulu and Afrikaans. The text, written by the composer, is based on the isiZulu myth; telling the tale of the birth of the moon. Originally commissioned by the Kittwiger Kamerchor, German.

Description

Award-winning composer, Pieter Bezuidenhout (1987 -) has come to be considered as one of South Africa’s most prominent young composers. Invested in the worlds of concert, chamber and theatre music, Bezuidenhout’s musical voice has come to be recognized as truly unique and innovative. He has received composition accolades from the Tri-Arts Music Foundation, The Stevans Grove International Composition Competition and the European Academy of Choral Conductors. He is regularly commissioned locally as well as internationally to write works for ensembles ranging from instrumental chamber groups to festival choirs. His works have been performed in Graz, Washington, Bratislava, Istanbul, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore and by the Choir of the Music Conservatory in the Canary Islands to great acclaim.
